Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Dies at 91

Nigeria has lost one of its longest-reigning and most respected traditional rulers. Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91. His transition marks the end of a 65-year reign one that blended cultural preservation, political influence, and developmental strides in Ijebuland and beyond.

His death, which followed closely on the heels of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s passing, casts a solemn mood across Nigeria. As the 50th Awujale, Oba Adetona’s reign began in 1960 the very year Nigeria gained independence. He symbolized continuity, wisdom, and strength for more than six decades.

A Monarch Born Into History

Born on May 10, 1934, Sikiru Kayode Adetona hailed from the Anikilaya Royal House of Ijebu-Ode in present-day Ogun State. He was crowned Awujale on April 2, 1960, at the youthful age of 25. His ascension came during a period of great change in Nigeria, just months before the country achieved independence from British rule.

Young but visionary, Oba Adetona quickly distinguished himself as a forward-thinking monarch. Over time, his rule became synonymous with modern Ijebuland blending rich Yoruba traditions with a passion for progress and development.

A Record-Breaking Reign

Reigning for 65 years, Oba Sikiru Adetona is among Africa’s longest-serving traditional rulers. His tenure saw Ijebuland evolve from a provincial community into a vibrant economic and cultural hub in southwestern Nigeria. He worked tirelessly to preserve Ijebu heritage while attracting investment, enhancing education, and encouraging peaceful coexistence.

Throughout his reign, he played host to numerous heads of state, governors, and global dignitaries. His counsel was regularly sought by politicians and religious leaders alike — proof of the respect he commanded.

Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy

Oba Adetona wasn’t just a custodian of culture; he was also a bold voice in national discourse. During the dark days of Nigeria’s military regimes, the Awujale stood out as one of the few traditional rulers who fearlessly spoke truth to power. He was a strong advocate for democracy, rule of law, and the constitutional role of monarchs in governance.

Notably, in the 1990s, he lent moral and public support to pro-democracy movements during Nigeria’s struggle to return to civilian rule. Even in his advanced years, the monarch remained politically conscious, lending wisdom without partisanship.

In 2012, Oba Adetona authored his memoir, “Awujale: The Autobiography of Alaiyeluwa Oba S.K. Adetona, Ogbagba II”, where he chronicled the challenges of kingship, his views on governance, and his journey through Nigeria’s complex political history.

Champion of Education and Development

A firm believer in education, the Awujale’s passion led to the founding of the Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance Studies at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye. In 2021, he endowed the institution with ₦1 billion a gesture that emphasized his lifelong commitment to training future leaders.

Oba Adetona also championed numerous developmental initiatives in Ogun State. Under his reign, roads, hospitals, and schools were either built or renovated in Ijebuland. He collaborated with successive state governments to improve infrastructure and social services.

Cultural Renaissance: Ojude Oba Festival

Perhaps one of his most iconic contributions to Nigerian culture is the elevation of the Ojude Oba Festival to an internationally recognized event. Celebrated annually in Ijebu-Ode, the festival brings together indigenes and tourists from across the world in colorful displays of fashion, music, horse riding, and homage-paying ceremonies.

Under Oba Adetona’s leadership, Ojude Oba evolved from a local Islamic thanksgiving event into a pan-Ijebu celebration of unity and heritage, generating revenue and boosting tourism.

A Nation Pays Tribute

Following the announcement of his passing, tributes poured in from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

President Bola Tinubu described him as “a towering figure of Yoruba tradition whose wisdom and patriotism influenced generations.”

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State said:

“This is a double tragedy. Losing the Awujale and a former president in one day is devastating. Oba Adetona was not just a royal father but a builder of men and a pillar of unity.”

Other traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo’s council, praised his consistency, integrity, and tireless service to the Yoruba nation.

End of an Era

Oba Sikiru Adetona’s passing truly marks the end of an era — one in which tradition met modernity, and kingship was redefined as a platform for service, wisdom, and nation-building.

Throughout wars, political transitions, economic downturns, and a pandemic, Oba Adetona remained steadfast. His calm leadership provided direction and comfort to millions. He became a father figure not just to the Ijebu people but to Yoruba land and Nigeria at large.

As the Ijebu traditional council prepares for royal rites and the announcement of his successor, the vacuum left by his death is undeniable.

Final Thoughts: A King Who Served With Honor

In life and in death, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona will be remembered as a monarch who ruled with grace, integrity, and unwavering purpose. His reign bridged generations, inspired leaders, and built a legacy that will outlive centuries.

His memory will live on through the values he promoted truth, progress, unity, and education. His impact on culture, politics, and development has been etched into the fabric of Nigerian history.
